On that same day, across the street at Flora-Bama, the USARA group (United States Army Ranger Association) hosted it's monthly meeting at Flora-Bama in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the Battle of Mogadishu. Rangers past and present honored those that fought and died on this historic day by running and walking one mile on the sand behind Flora-Bama. Many gathered just to cheer the runners on. This one mile movement is often referred to as the Mogadishu Mile or MOG Mile.
The Mogadishu Mile refers to a route that was run by American Rangers and Delta Force soldiers from a helicopter crash site during the Battle of Mogadishu on October 4, 1993. The Americans involved were part of Task Force Ranger. The Battle of Mogadishu is also known as the Black Hawk Down incident.
